The Blogger: Sarah Davis

In the art world, there are many paths one can choose when going forward! For this interview, I decieded to ask one of my high school classmates, Sarah Davis about what her career as a blogger is like! You can check out her blog at http://styledsisterhood.com/ .

Q: What is it that you do? Who are you?

( Please give a description of the type of work/artwork you do.)

A:My name is Sarah and I am 20 years old. I am currently doing a lot of different things! I’m currently living in Los Angeles and working with a non profit called Justice 180. We do anti trafficking work in LA and worldwide! I love that I can do this job about something I’m really passionate about. I also have a blog on the side and frequently write about intentional living, ethical fashion, and my personal life. Over the past few months I’ve also been selling some handprinted jean jackets, personalized calligraphy, and more with my art on them. Anything creative I can do, I’m all over it. This is why I love exploring different fields of work!

Q: What inspired you to start your blog?

A:I was first inspired to start writing about five years ago when I was in high school. I loved fashion then and really wanted to start giving people fashion tips and tricks. After I began writing, I realized how passionate I was about getting my thoughts out there! Every day I came home excited to write something new. My mind was constantly racing with new ideas, creative projects, and fun fashion tips to share. I received so much positive feedback that I kept doing it to encourage and inspire others. It expanded into something that encouraged others and helped people around me to live better. Now I blog because I love the thought of pushing others to live intentionally and recognize their value and purpose in this world.

Q: What would be your ideal working environment?

A: My ideal working environment is actually at home with a candle going and a cup of coffee in my hand. Eventually, I love the thought of being able to be my own boss and working from home! There’s something about the coziness of a room and the warmth of coffee while I write. I’d love to write near a window with sunlight streaming in because it brings me SO much joy when I see the sun. And, of course, there has to be a bookshelf near me. That way I can take breaks to read a few pages of my favorite book and be inspired!

Q: Who has impacted you most in blogging and how?

A: I would say a lot of my friends and family have impacted me the most on this blogging journey. Blogging is HARD work and it doesn’t get any easier over the years. But, any time I’m close to giving up my family or friends will remind me of my passion to write and encourage me to keep going. I’ve had so many conversations that changed my perspective of blogging and reminded me that my writing really does impact people. So many of my friends have spurred me on to keep writing because my words have power. This has meant so much to me and truly helped my blog stay alive over the years. Other than that, I’m so thankful for all the bloggers I’ve connected with through social media. The blogging community is really amazing and so kind! Anytime I’ve asked questions, I’ve gotten back such good advice that’s really helped my blog stay up and running!

Q: What has been the biggest struggle with your blog?

A: The biggest struggle of my blog has been continuing to go no matter how many page views I have, amount of motivation I carry, or how much money I make. Over the years there have been many times I’ve wanted to quit, but decided not to because I remember how passionate I am about it. I really would miss not blogging if I decided to quit. However, writer's block is REAL. This is one of the hardest things about blogging: finding the motivation to keep doing it even on the days I don’t feel like it. Many times I’ve just had to sit down and start writing even if my brain is screaming no. In the end, I remind myself of why I started and it gets me really excited again.

Q: What advice do you have to give to someone who is just starting their own blog?

A:I would say just start. So many people I talk to want to start a blog and I want to ask, “Why not?!” What is stopping you from starting one? After you start one, I’d say don’t pay attention to page views. It will immediately discourage you if this is the only thing you focus on. Instead, focus on the passion you have for writing or what you want to communicate to your readers! Always have an audience in mind when writing. Think, how does this benefit them? What questions is this post answering? What is the purpose of my blog? These things will motivate you throughout the startup of your blog and keep you going!
