It can be difficult to know what the art work field is like outside of a school setting. Especially when studying art! There are many ways an individual can go in the artist work field, but it can be very intimidating to jump right in. I've decided to ask some of my peers what their take on subjects relating to art are like during this time. The first person I choose is Denallie Moore or Dee. De runs her own business and is also a student at the same time.
In an interview, I asked Dee some questions many people may have when juggling school and their own business.
Q:What is it that you "do"? Please describe your artwork/ business here.
A: I've always been close to geology. My parents had a unique passion for collecting and involved me at an early age. By the time I was ten, I was helping my dad mine garnets in our small claim. I've found jewelry to be a way to honor the beautiful things the earth makes. While I work sculpturally as well, my business is in making adornments specific to the geology and flora of the place I happen to be in.
Q:Is there something that surprised you when you first started?
A: The community that revolves around art markets and local fairs is amazingly supportive. People don't consider other artists competition for the most part. At my first fair I met a lovely jeweler in the stall right next to mine and we're friends still.
Q: What does a typical work day look for you?
A: I go into the studio, go to class, go back into the studio, and sleep. Managing production and classes is...a lot. I'm eager for my graduation in May.
Q: What are you most excited about right now?
A: Global health willing, I'll be attending a goldsmithing conference in May. I went last year and met so many artists that I can't wait to go back.
Q: What are some recommendations for you can give to other artists just starting their own business?
A: Talk to people. Ask questions. Reach out to people outside academia if you're still in school. Other artists might seem high and mighty, but they're probably going to give you an honest response if you contact them. Surround yourself with people on a similar path to you. They will become allies, not competition.
